HOW ANXIETY AND ANGER ARE CHANGING OUR YOUTH

In an age defined by constant connectivity and unprecedented pressures, a silent storm is brewing within our young people. Anxiety and anger, once considered fleeting emotions, are now manifesting as a profound and pervasive force, impacting their mental well-being, relationships, and future.

The roots of this crisis are complex, Social media, with its curated perfection and relentless compassions, fuels a culture of inadequacy and fear of missing out. Academic and societal expectations create a pressure cooker environment where fear of failure can be paralyzing. And the uncertainties of the world-from climate change to social unrest - add a layer of existential dread that can feel overwhelming.

Anxiety in young people is often a silent struggle.  It can manifest as perfectionism, social withdrawal, or physical symptoms like headaches and stomachaches. The persistent state of worry can erode self-esteem and prevent them from taking the healthy steps  necessary for growth and development.

Anger on the other hand, is often a more visible emotion. It can be a reaction to feeling unheard, misunderstood, or powerless in a world that seems stacked against them. This anger if left unaddressed, can lead to destructive behaviors, strained family relationships, and difficulties in school and social settings.

The combination of anxiety and anger is particularly potent and concerning. A young person who feels anxious about their future may become angry at the systems or people they perceive as responsible for their distress. This can lead to a cycle of internal conflict that is difficult to break.

What can we do about it? The first step is to create a culture of open communication where young people feel saf to express their emotions without judgment. We must provide them with the tools to manage their feelings-from mindfulness and therapy to creative outlets and physical activity. Most importantly, we must model heal emotional regulation and remind them that their worth is not defined by their achievements or their social media presence.

By acknowledging the impact of anxiety and anger on our youth, we can beg to build a society that is not only more empathetic but also more equipped to help navigate the challenges of growing up in the modern world.
